Alfred Hitchcock on BD - Official Discussion Thread

Postby Marty McFly » Sat Jan 31, 2009 3:47 am

This is in addition to the MAJOR classic titles that Warner confirmed last year were likely to hit Blu-ray in 2009, including The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind and North by Northwest.

North by Northwest = Favourite film of all time. This one needs to be a first class BD release.

Hitchcock movies might finally be coming out to BD? Plus to top it off, North by Northwest might be the first? Great choice, lets just hope they do it right.

Marty, what will you be looking for with this release, if the rumors are true of cause?

Top notch AV quality. First and foremost.

I'd like all the extras ported from the original DVD (there's quite a lot of cool stuff on there) and I'd like some new extra features too. :)

I'm starting to doubt whether WB will release NORTH BY NORTHWEST this year. There's not been any news as of yet.

There are rumours that NORTH BY NORTHWEST, my favourite film of all time is going to get a 50th Anniversary this November.

I have got to be honest here I have never seen that film but from the trailer i really liked I had to just keep on watching. I think this could be one I enjoy if I can watch a Old film in The Getaway and love it then anything is possible.

Nothing wrong with "old" films Batman. One day the Fast and Furious films and The Dark Knight will be 100 years-old too. You wouldn't want people to stop watching them just because there old, so why do the same to other films of the past?

They will but i don't think they will have the same effect on people as the likes of this did on the people of today. I have nothing agaist old films Marty I just meen they are not my intial choice but i should never disregard them without watching them otherwise it would be wrong.

I understand what your saying with the rest of your post, but I don't quite get this bit - could you elaborate a little? :)

what I meant was the likes of Fast and Furious wont have the same affect on people in the future as the likes of North by Northwest did on the people of today.

Old films are not my first choice maybe this is due to not proper film education, I have always enjoyed up to date action flicks etc but i should never disregard a film that is OLD just because of the age of the film it doesn't matter how old a film is there is good and bad films in every era. I would love to watch more Older films to take more of a different look on Older films and by your recomendations Marty so far i have not been dissapointed.

I see, I understand what your saying now Batman.

what I meant was the likes of Fast and Furious wont have the same affect on people in the future as the likes of North by Northwest did on the people of today.

Let me just point out, I still have yet to watch any of the Fast and Furious films properly. However I think they'll be remembered similiar to how Batman '89 is remembered. They'll have a fan base and will be remembered as being entertaining but flawed movies.

Alfred Hitchcock's films are the work of a true cinematic master. A one of a kind. His films will be analysed and dissected as long as there exists cinema. I think the only comparable figure in modern Hollywood cinema today is Martin Scorsese and even he falls short of the mastery of the format displayed by Hitchcock but he's the closest we've got and he's made at least one film that is equal quality to Hitchcock's work (Goodfellas).

I would love to watch more Older films to take more of a different look on Older films and by your recomendations Marty so far i have not been dissapointed.

I'm glad you've enjoyed the selections I have recommended to you thus far Batman. Being a film fan can be a magical journey, and I am happy to have opened some doors to some wondrous cinematic worlds for you.

The only Hitchcock film i have seen to date is Physco I watched this back in school for GCSE (later pulled for some reason and had to do it on Bend it Like Beckham poor choice of film) i thought it was good looking back onit at the time I wasn't a huge fan of films I more saw them as time passsers but as years went by i became to see them in a different light as art form and became more obsssesed with them in a different way before and i have to sat Physco is a well directed film espesially the "SHOWERS SCENE" so from the little i know about Hitchcock his work seems truelly brilliant. As For Matyin Scorsese I have seen a film that hasn't been near perfect for him Casino, The Departed etc I would also love to see his film Taxi Driver I heard some positively great points of view for it.

I just want to thank you again, if it wasn't for I might not have ever seen some true classics like The Getaway.

I find stuff like this really interesting.

You see Psycho had a profound effect on me upon my initial viewing of the film. It's a funny story actually.

For me Psycho redefined what cinema is, what it can do and it changed me as a person. All from that initial viewing many years ago.

It certinally redefined what is acceptable in films as before Physco came out there was nothing like it that stood out the same as the likes of the shower scene really raised the bar on film making.

Psycho was the first movie to say that audience members had to see it from the START! Before that, you could go into a cinema at any point during the movie. So people would go in halfway through a film, the film would then play in a complete loop and then they would leave once the film came to the point which it was at when they first arrived.

Hitchcock said that this was unacceptable for Psycho because it would ruin the films surprise.

There's a lot of interesting, cool and shocking pieces of film history facts that would blow your mind. The plus point to the above one, is that you could sit in the cinema and watch the same film over and over for the price of one ticket. So say you go and see It's a Wonderful Life, you could make a day of it and sit in the cinema and watch it 2-3 times.

Coming in half way through a movie was completely natural to audiences back then who were used to it. In essence some of them may watch the end of the film, followed by the beginning and then finish the film with the middle. Maybe that opened the door for directors such as Tarantino today, who likes to play around with the timeline in his films (for example in Pulp Fiction).

Wow that is truely amazing. It just goes to show how much the past in films has a massive effect of films of today. Cinema experiance have changed dramtically in years of how now it is like alot of people go as time killer which has put many Film addicts going as these people cause distractions I wish they brought in stricter policies.

In the mid-20s through to the early 50s cinema was a communal affair, people who go to the cinema to watch many hours worth of material including things such as newsreels, cartoon shorts, short films and then the main feature. People would bring picnics etc. So in many ways, even the more distracting members of the audience are nothing new!

Wow again goes to show how much things of changed instead of Picnics we have popcorn. The thing that wouldnt of affected the 20s to early 50s is Mobile Phones they have got to be the worst cinema distraction going.

Again, that's debatable. What would you find more distracting - a mobile phone screen or the cinema projector EXPLODING into flames?

You see that was known to happen back at the beginning of cinema since film was made out of the highly volatile nitrocellulose. In the early 1920s projectors where housed at the back of the cinema just behind the back seats of the cinema. However since people kept dying and being badly injured due to the projectors bursting into flames, they decided to move the projector into its own room as a safety pro-caution and the projection booth was born. :)
