In the interviews given to promote Avatar, which opens in theaters today, James Cameron has already given a few tips on the Blu-ray of his latest movie epic. The filmmaker said that the BD will include over ten minutes of deleted scenes, and also that the initial Blu-ray release of 'Avatar' "probably won't be in 3-D", and there will be another edition with 3-D support in late 2010.

Cameron told MTV that the discarded footage gave added background on the native Na'vi people of Pandora. "It's all wonderful stuff, but it was sort of bogging down the middle section of the movie," Cameron said. "So there's plenty for a value-added DVD experience on this film. Of course, we'll have to go punch it all up and get it all mixed and stuff like that." There is also a trial ritual where, to become one of the clan, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) must hunt a local beast.

With regard to whether the Blu-ray release would include 3-D or not, Cameron said: "Probably the initial Blu-ray release of Avatar won't be in 3-D and then a subsequent release will be in 3-D. That's my guess right now. So we will probably put out a disk, you know, in six or eight months, let's call it six months, and then after that we will have a 3-D disc when there are enough sets available."

This will mean that, when released, that BD will utilize the Blu-ray 3D specification (see blu-ray.com, December 17).

I just want the 2D BD set. I'm not interested in 3D BD at the moment.

Geek Peek: Avatar SteelBook UK Blu-ray
Posted March 2, 2010 02:12 PM by Juan Calonge

Avatar still hasn't an official Blu-ray date, but British retailers already have received cover art images for the upcoming BD edition. The image posted indicates that the UK branch of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release James Cameron's megablockbuster in a SteelBook release with artcards and a printed "Activist Survival Guide."

It's up for pre-order now.

Amazon (steelbook £24.99): https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_no ... lu&x=0&y=0

Play (steelbook w/free T-shirt): http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/3-/574773/2-/Promo.html

I've ordered mine from Amazon. Not interested in the T-shirt, looks goofy and they usually send these things in XL. No, I want Amazons customer service available to me, just incase there's a problem with the order.

After weeks of speculation and rumors, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced Avatar on Blu-ray. As James Cameron himself revealed a month ago (see blu-ray.com, February 18), the release date has been set for Thursday, April 22 (Earth Day). In a first for a major theatrical release on Blu-ray, the studio will go Superbit on James Cameron's megablockbuster and release it without any special features of any sort, in order to maximize audio and video quality. A DVD will be included with the BD.

Avatar producer Jon Landau explained to the Los Angeles Times that they told Fox that "we wanted to do something really special and reach for the best presentation of any film in the history of the format." Landau adds, "Everything that is put on a disc takes up room – the menus, the extras, the trailers and studio promotions – and we got rid of all of that so we could give this movie the best picture and sound possible." Extra time and care have been devoted to this project, with the video compression sessions taking six weeks, as opposed to the usual two weeks for a typical theatrical release.

A multidisc "ultimate version" Blu-ray is planned for November. Details will be given during a press event in March 23, which will be attended by Landau and Cameron.

Regarding a 3D release, Fox sources again denied reports that it would come out later this year. The Digital Bits hazards a guess that it will probably come "in a third dip a year or two from now", once there is a market for 3D on Blu-ray.

...and so the milking begins. If you buy this edition be warned... there WILL be many superior releases of the film in the coming years.

1st edition - completely barebones, steelbook packaging.

2nd edition - lots of extra features and an extended version of the film.

3rd edition - barebones 3D edition.

4th edition - Full blown special edition containing loads of extra features, all cuts of the film and 3D version.

I have gone for the Amazon one aswel as Play are not very reliable and yes I agree that t-shirt looks pretty poor.

These are the editions I will pick up, first of all the

1st edition - completely barebones, steelbook packaging.

2nd edition - lots of extra features and an extended version of the film.

4th edition - Full blown special edition containing loads of extra features, all cuts of the film and 3D version.

yes picking up the same film 3 times but it will be over the course of time but they are definatly milking this for all it's worth just like what happened with Watchmen but more in depth.

The aspect ratio of Avatar will be 1.78:1 for the BD. I think this will really suit the film for home viewing. Should look really incredible on screens in the 50" - 70" range.

On the contrary, it should look okay on your screen. Since 1.78:1 will fill your screen, where as a 2.35:1 transfer would have large black bars on the top and bottom of your screen, giving you a postage stamp sized image (but that's still the correct way to view it, NEVER stretch the image to get rid of the black bars and NEVER cross the streams).

awww yes that's a major rule I know my parents use there players to zoom the picture in to get rid of the Black Bars big no no and my brother does that sometimes but you tell them and it goes in one ear out the other. What do you meen by cross the streams?
